BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh swimming and diving teams will head to New Jersey this weekend to compete in the Big Al Open Friday and Saturday at Princeton’s DeNunzio Pool. The Mountain Hawks will compete against Fordham, Georgetown, TCNJ and the host Tigers in what will be Lehigh’s first competition in two weeks.

The Mountain Hawks’ scheduled meet last Saturday at Rider was cancelled due to damage caused by Superstorn Sandy. Prior to that, Lehigh split a dual meet at Colgate with the Mountain Hawk men (1-1) picking up their first win of the season while the women fell to a tough Raider squad to fall to 0-2.

Last year at the Big Al Open, Lehigh posted a solid showing in both men’s and women’s competition. Junior Demetri Karedis set a school record in the 50 yard freestyle, posting a time of 20.33. He also won the 100 yard freestyle. The men’s team took second in the 200 medley relay and on the women’s side, sophomore Alissa Leung took second in the 100 yard backstroke.

This season the Lehigh women opened with a three point loss to West Chester before the loss to Colgate, which is perennially one of the top teams in Patriot League women’s swimming and diving. Freshman Cady Zawatson has been a bright spot for the Mountain Hawks, winning both the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle events in both of Lehigh’s meets this season.

Following the Big Al Open at Princeton, the Mountain Hawks will visit rival Lafayette on Friday November 16.

The Big Al Open begins Friday night at 6 p.m. from Princeton’s DeNunzio Pool. On Saturday the meet will conclude with two sessions, set for 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
