PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Lehigh women’s golf team opened up action at the Rutgers Invitational Friday with the first 18 holes of the 36-hole tournament at the Rutgers University Golf Course. Behind balanced scoring, the Mountain Hawks are one of four teams tied for ninth place in the 21-team field after shooting 323 on Friday.
Head coach Judy Dwyer opted for a lineup consisting of two seniors, one junior and two freshmen, with all five players shooting between 80 and 82 on the day.
Senior Ginette Schapira and junior Crystal Lee were the low scorers for Lehigh, with identical rounds of 80. Both players shot 42 on the front nine before turning in rounds of 38 on the back nine. Schapira and Lee are currently tied for 42nd place.
Freshman Tess Jennings shot 81 (41-40) and is tied for 50th place, while senior Chelsea Michalek and freshman Nicole Feierberg both shot 82 (41-41) and are tied for 57th.
Lehigh’s top performance of the day actually came from sophomore Kelly Moylan, who is competing as an individual along with classmate Melanie Dickens. Moylan shot 77 (38-39) and is tied for 12th while Dickens is tied for 65th place after an 83 (41-42).
The Mountain Hawks are tied for ninth with Central Connecticut State, Delaware and LIU-Brooklyn, 24 shots behind Seton Hall, which leads the field after a first round 299. Host Rutgers is in second place, five shots behind the Pirates, while St. John’s sits in third after a 312 on day one.
Individually, Seton Hall’s Christina Cantu shot 72 and holds a one stroke lead heading into the final round.
The Rutgers Invitational concludes Saturday with the final 18 holes, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
