Miller, Kendzor earn PL Rookie of the Week nods
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A pair of Lehigh cross country freshmen took home Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on Monday as Jimmy Miller (Ijamsville, Md.) and Jessica Kendzor (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) were recognized with the awards by the league office. Miller, who earned the honor for the second straight week, and Kendzor were Lehigh’s top-finishing freshmen last Friday at the Brooks-Paul Short Run.
Kendzor placed 118th out of 367 runners in the women’s Gold 6K on Friday and was Lehigh’s second finisher behind junior Katherine Pierce, who placed 38th overall. Kendzor was the Patriot League’s top finishing freshman at the meet with a personal-best 6K time of 22:17 and was the eighth league runner to cross the finish overall.
“Jess emerged on the scene as a cross country runner at the Iona Meet of Champs,” women’s cross country coach Debbie Utesch said. “It’s nice to see her become consistent at this level.”
Miller crossed the finish line 109th out of 387 runners in the men’s Gold 8K and was Lehigh’s second runner to place after senior Evans Kosgei (45th overall). Miller topped all Patriot League freshmen at the meet with a time of 25:14 and was the seventh Patriot League competitor to cross the finish overall.
“This is now his second award, so people are going to know who he is,” men’s cross country coach Todd Etters said about Miller. “He’s going to have that target on his back going into the Patriot League Championship in terms of competing for Rookie of the Year.”
In addition to Miller and Kendzor, Pierce earned a Patriot League Honorable Mention for her performance (21:22) at the Brooks-Paul Short Run. Pierce has been Lehigh’s top finisher in eight straight meets dating back to last year.
The Lehigh women’s team placed 24th out of 41 teams on Friday and maintained its top-15 Mid-Atlantic Regional ranking for the fourth straight week at No. 14 in this week’s poll.The men’s squad finished 32nd out of 42 teams in the Gold race and moved up in the poll to No. 13.
Both cross country teams will be back in action on October 16 for the Penn State Invitational and the Lafayette Invitational.
