Lehigh travels to race at Iona College Meet of Champions
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women’s cross country team will race at the Iona College Meet of Champions this Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks will look to improve upon their sixth place finish at last year’s Meet of Champions and will be looking to use their momentum after a dominant win at the Lehigh Invitational on September 2nd.
At that home Invitational, Lehigh placed seven runners inside the top 13 as freshman Savanna Plombon led the way for the Mountain Hawks finishing second with a time of 22:05.50. Following Plombon was freshmen Shannon Nelson in sixth (22:57.40), Hannah Pierce in eighth (23:01.60), senior Carolyn Morse in ninth, and sophomore Katherine Howley, junior Tori Berard and sophomore Jessica Kendzor in 11th through 13th respectively.
"I was pretty excited about what I saw," said Lehigh head coach Debbie Utesch. "It was a different look for us and we put some pressure on other people to see who was going to step up. The upperclassmen did a tremendous job and the freshmen showed they are ready to be in the mix so I think that’s some great stuff to build on."
At last year’s Meet of Champions, it was Katherine Pierce who was the top Lehigh finisher with a 10th place overall finish with a time of 22:26 and the Mountain Hawks had four other Lehigh runners place in the Top-50. Kentucky took first place last year while Brown, La Salle, Penn and Columbia rounded out the top five in that order.
Lehigh is coming off a very successful 2010 season, and this weekend will be a great test of where the team stands this season. Some of the top teams in the region will be competing in New York, and Lehigh’s squad will be faced with its first real challenge of the season.
"It will give us a good chance to see where we stack up in the region," said Utesch.
