BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Jessica Kendzor of the Lehigh women’s cross country team was honored with the Patriot League Female Rookie of the Week award, as announced Monday. Kendzor was Lehigh’s top-finishing freshman at the Penn State Invitational on Saturday, finishing the 6K in a time of 22:29 to help the Mountain Hawks place 17th out of 31 teams.
Kendzor finished 90th out of 304 runners at Penn State, placing one second behind teammate Katherine Pierce, who was Lehigh’s top-finisher for the ninth straight race. Kendzor has been the Mountain Hawks top-finishing freshman for three straight meets, including the Brooks-Paul Short Run on October 1.
Kendzor was also named Female Rookie of the Week on October 4 for her performance at the Paul Short Run. The Wappingers Falls, N.Y. native posted a season-best 6K time of 22:17 at the event en route to a 118th-place finish out of 367 runners. Kendzor also placed 45th out of 164 at the Iona Meet of Champs on September 18 and fifth overall at the Lehigh-Lafayette Dual on September 25.
The Lehigh women’s cross country team, ranked No. 14 in the Mid-Atlantic Regional poll, has had a successful season leading up to the Patriot League Championship on October 30. The squad opened the season with a second-place finish at the Lehigh Invitational, before taking sixth at the Iona Meet of Champions. The team secured bragging rights over rival Lafayette with a dual victory to close out September and placed 24th out of 41 teams in one of the most competitive races of the season at the Paul Short Run.
The 2010 Patriot League Championship will be hosted by Lafayette, a course the Mountain Hawks have already run this season. Two weeks later, the team will gear up for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifier hosted by Penn State.
