Muething named PL Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Posted: 05/03/2011
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh sophomore Patricia Muething has been named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis, it was announced on Tuesday. Muething becomes the second Lehigh women’s tennis player in as many years to win the ward, joining Julie Arthofer ’10 who won the award last year. She also is one of five student-athletes named to the inaugural Academic All-League team.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League teams are voted on by the league’s sports information directors, who are not permitted to vote to their student-athletes.

Muething, a two-year letter winner for head coach Dave Shook’s squad, owns a 3.77 cumulative grade point average in Lehigh’s College of Business and Economics.  She is a member of Lehigh’s Dean’s List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and has earned the Faculty Athletics Council Academic Award in each of her first three semesters at Lehigh. Muething was named the women’s tennis team’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year following the 2010 season.

“Patricia ‘Trish’ Muething is an extremely hard worker both on and off the court,” Shook said. “Last year when Julie won the award, she knew Trish had a good semester and was breathing down her neck for the award. Trish was in a perfect position to carry on the tradition.”

On the court, the Bethlehem native was a mainstay in the middle of the Mountain Hawks lineup. Muething’s primary position was at No. 4 singles, where she posted a 4-6 record and finished with a 6-13 overall mark in singles with a 3-3 Patriot League record. She was 1-2 in Patriot League doubles matches as well, filling in at the No. 2 flight.

Muething became the third Lehigh women’s tennis player to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Arthofer and Gwen Dwyer, who won the award in 2007. She is the second Lehigh student-athlete to earn a Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award this year, joining Jonathan Stumpf, who received the honor for men’s lacrosse last week.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award or the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter of key contributor in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for the honor.
