Hampshire named to All-Patriot League second team

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh freshman Taylor Hampshire has been named to the All-Patriot League women’s tennis second team, it was announced Monday. Hampshire represented the Mountain Hawks at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles spots and consistently battled against the opposition’s top players. The All-League teams are voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Hampshire played exclusively at the No. 1 singles spot for the Mountain Hawks amassing a 5-12 record, including a 2-3 mark against Patriot League opponents. The Wilmette, Illinois native also went 5-12 in doubles playing all but one of her matches at the top spot alongside classmate Jenai Bilimoria.
Among the highlights from Hampshire in league play were wins against Holy Cross in both doubles and singles in the Patriot League opener. Hampshire also defeated Colgate twice in singles, earning points in both the regular season and the Patriot League quarterfinals. She did not play singles against rival Lafayette but did team with Bilimoria for a key doubles point win that helped Lehigh clinch the match.
Patriot League Champion Army placed six players on the All-League teams. The Black Knights’ Annie Houghton was named the league’s Player of the Year, while Army’s Jamila Paul was named Rookie of the Year. Navy’s Keith Puryear was honored as the league’s Coach of the Year.
Hampshire is one of five Lehigh freshmen and eight Mountain Hawks overall who will return for the 2012 season. Lehigh finished 2011 at 6-13.
