Posted: 01/09/2012
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh freshman Alyssa Leung has been named the Patriot League’s Female Swimmer of the Week, it was announced Monday. Leung has been dominant in the backstroke early in her Lehigh career, and this past weekend swept the 100 and 200 yard back events in the Mountain Hawks’ loss to MAAC power Marist.

Leung captured the 100 back in 1:00.43 and added a win in the 200 back in a time of 2:08.59, as the Lehigh women enjoyed their best performance in recent memory against a very good Marist team, as the Brown and White fell 171-129. The Garden City, N.Y. native also competed in the 200 yard individual medley, placing third with a time of 2:16.23 and swam the leadoff leg of Lehigh’s second place 200 medley relay team with an opening split of 28.27 in the backstroke.

For the season, Leung has been one of Lehigh’s best and most consistent performers. She has won at least two events in five of the Mountain Hawks first six dual meets. Leung won three events, the 100 and 200 back and the 200 IM in Lehigh’s win over Lafayette in late December. She also placed second in the 100 and 200 back events against league power Colgate, and finished second in the 100 back against a tough field at the Princeton Invitational.

Leung and the Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Friday when they head to West Point, N.Y. to face Patriot League rival Army. The meet is set for a 6 p.m. start from Crandall Pool.
