Hamlin named to Academic All-America third team
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh wrestling junior Robert Hamlin has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large third team it was announced Thursday. In addition to another All-America campaign on the mat, Hamlin excelled in the classroom in 2011-12 as well and is rewarded with Lehigh wrestling's first-ever Academic All-America honor from CoSIDA.
Hamlin is the second Lehigh student-athlete to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors during the 2011-12 academic year, joining softball shortstop Jen Colquhoun, who was named first team Academic All-America last month.
After reaching the NCAA finals and becoming the first Division I wrestling All-American from the state of Vermont as a sophomore, Hamlin responded with another outstanding season on the mats in 2011-12. He posted a 31-3 overall record, including a 16-1 mark in dual meet competition. Hamlin won his second straight EIWA championship, downing eventual NCAA Champion Steve Bosak of Cornell in the finals, and also won the 184-pound title at the prestigious Midlands Championships in late December. He won his second All-American medal with a fourth place showing at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis back in March. Hamlin owns an 81-18 career record and is a three-time NCAA qualifier.
Last month the Jonesville, Vermont native became Lehigh’s first Academic All-District selection in wrestling since current assistant coach Brad Dillon was recognized back in 2004. Hamlin has been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team in each of the last two seasons. He finished this year with a 3.38 cumulative grade point average, majoring in Materials Science and Engineering. A two-year team captain, Hamlin is also active in Lehigh Athletics’ Leadership Academy and Emerging Leaders program.
The Academic All-America At-Large teams are voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from the pool of first team Academic All-District selections.
The Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. Hamlin is one of seven Division I wrestlers to earn Academic All-America honors. He is one of two wrestlers on the third team, which consists of 15 student-athletes overall.
