WASHINGTON – Lehigh senior Robert Hamlin unofficially opened his 2012-13 season with a 5-3 win over Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota at 184 pounds in the 47th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic Saturday night at American University’s Bender Arena. Hamlin, a two-time EIWA Champion and All-American was the first Lehigh wrestler to compete at the All-Star Classic since 2004.
Hamlin enters his senior season ranked No. 3 nationally in most polls. The matches at the NWCA All-Star Classic are considered exhibitions and do not count towards a wrestler’s official season record.
The first period of Saturday night’s match featured no scoring, as Steinhaus took the initial shot about 40 seconds in, with Hamlin circling away. Hamlin attempted two re-shots but was unable to capitalize. Steinhaus attacked Hamlin’s leg later in the period but Hamlin was able to get away without giving up a takedown.
Hamlin deferred his choice to Steinhaus, who chose bottom and escaped within five seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Steinhaus attempted a few shots while Hamlin looked to establish collar ties. With just over a minute remaining in the period Hamlin shot a single leg and finished with a trip to take a 2-1 lead. After 13 seconds, Steinhaus escaped to tie the score at 2-2 at the end of two periods.
In the third period, Hamlin regained the lead with a quick escape and nearly scored on a double leg shot but Steinhaus was able to defend. Steinhaus came back with a pair of quality shots including a deep single leg with just under a minute remaining that Hamlin was able to limp out of. Hamlin put the match away with a slick high-crotch shot for his second takedown with 30 seconds remaining in the bout. Steinhaus escaped with 12 seconds remaining and with no scoring in a final flurry, Hamlin prevailed 5-3, with riding time not a factor.
Hamlin improved to 2-0 against Steinhaus, with the previous win coming by a 3-2 score in last year’s NCAA consolation semifinals. Hamlin’s victory was the first for a Lehigh wrestler in the NWCA All-Star Classic since Troy Letters won a 3-2 decision over David Bolyard of Central Michigan in November 2004. Lehigh wrestlers now own a 14-13 career record in the NWCA All-Star Classic.
The Mountain Hawks will open the dual meet season on Thursday when they host Binghamton at 7 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME, by visiting the Lehigh Box Office at Stabler Arena or by visiting Lehighsports.com.
