Redfern announces 2013 women’s lacrosse captains
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh head women’s lacrosse coach Jill Redfern announced the team’s 2013 captains on Wednesday following a team vote. Seniors Anna Patterson, Julie McBrien and MaryLeah DiNisco will serve as tri-captains, looking to lead a young and talented Mountain Hawk squad which features nine freshmen and nine sophomores.
“Collectively, these three bring a variety of leadership strengths as well as strong relationships with all members of our team,” said Redfern. “Individually, McBrien leads with grit and effort. Patterson is a team builder and the glue of the team. ML is a team-first individual and a player who is passionate about winning. They have a ton of competitive experience between them and each lead different units on the field.”
Patterson has been an offensive threat for the Mountain Hawks since stepping foot on campus. The Severna Park, Md. native has tallied 35 goals in her three seasons at Lehigh and added 19 assists for a total of 54 points. Her breakout season came as a sophomore when she had a career-high 21 goals and 28 points.
A two-time captain, McBrien was co-captain with Leigh Ann Torcivia a season ago. McBrien has started each of the 50 games she’s played during her career and is a two-time Second Team All-Patriot League honoree. After playing in a defensive role her freshmen season, she’s thrived as a midfielder the past two years. McBrien tallied 18 goals and 11 assists as a sophomore, then 24 goals and 12 assists as a junior to give her an impressive 42 career goals and 66 career points.
DiNisco has impressed during her three seasons as a goalkeeper for Lehigh. She holds a 15-10 record with a 10.27 goals against average and .438 save percentage through her first three seasons. Lehigh’s 2012 Coaches Award Winner, DiNisco showed off her skills to the nation in the summer of 2010 when she advanced to the second round of tryouts for the United States women’s developmental team. She was Lehigh’s primary starter as a freshman and led the squad to the Patriot League Championship Game.
