Mountain Hawks head to Temple Saturday

Posted: 02/22/2013
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women’s lacrosse team is looking for its second straight win to start the season when it travels to Temple on Saturday. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. The Mountain Hawks earned their first win when they knocked off Villanova in their season opener last weekend.

Sophomore Carli Sukonik led the offensive charge with an impressive five-goal performance to earn honorable mention recognition on the Patriot League weekly honor roll. Senior Julie McBrien added a pair of goals and game-high six draw controls while freshman Megan Paytas dished two assists. Sophomores Lauren Willcox and Kelsey Yenco each scooped three groundballs. When Villanova had a chance to send the game into overtime, junior goalkeeper Alexandra Fitzpatrick defended the cage and sealed the win for Lehigh.

Most recently, Temple continued its four-game homestand to begin the season by beating Rutgers to improve to 2-0. The Owls were led by freshman Rachel Schwaab, who notched her first-career hat trick in the team’s 8-7 win. Junior Jaymie Tabor and senior Stephany Parcell scored two goals apiece for the Owls while sophomore Molly Seefried also scored in the victory.

Lehigh is 1-14 all-time against Temple. In the 2012 meet-up Lehigh lost 14-5 at home, but that came a year after the Mountain Hawks won their first-ever game against Temple in dominating fashion, 18-6. Fitzpatrick made 16 saves in a dominant effort.

Following Saturday’s contest, the Mountain Hawks will then continue its road trip with a 4 p.m. game at Binghamton on Feb. 27.
