The U.S. Lacrosse National Tournament heads to Bethlehem this weekend, which includes a showdown between Team USA and Team Canada on Saturday. The tournament began in 1933 to showcase the best post-collegiate and club women’s lacrosse players and has grown into one of the largest women’s lacrosse events in the nation.
Lehigh head women’s lacrosse coach Jill Redfern announced the team’s 2013 award winners on Tuesday. Senior Julie McBrien garnered Athlete of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year while sophomore Kelly Scott earned the Coaches Award.
Lehigh senior midfielder Julie McBrien has been named to the Academic All-Patriot League team, as announced late Tuesday. McBrien wrapped up a stellar four-year career on the field last week, posting 36 points for a second straight season while enjoying tremendous success in the classroom as well.
Following strong 2013 seasons, Lehigh women’s lacrosse senior Julie McBrien and sophomores Carli Sukonik and Lauren Willcox have earned Second Team All-Patriot League, as announced on Tuesday. McBrien led the Mountain Hawks in goals (33) and points (36) while Sukonik was right behind with 25 goals and 28 points. Willcox helped anchor a young defense that continues to grow.
The Lehigh women’s lacrosse team scored five of the first six goals, but Holy Cross responded with a vengeance as the Crusaders came back to down the Mountain Hawks, 14-6 on Friday. Lehigh’s five goals came in the game’s first 8:42, but it wasn’t enough. Senior Julie McBrien and sophomore Carli Sukonik scored two goals apiece to lead the way.
