Michalek leads Lehigh after opening round at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Lehigh opened up action at the three-day, 54-hole Nittany Lion Invitational, which began Friday on the par-72 Penn State Blue Course. Junior Chelsea Michalek led the way for the Mountain Hawks, shooting an opening round 76 to sit in a tie for 13th place after 18 holes. As a team Lehigh shot 318 to sit in 13th place in the 15 team field.
Michalek led the way for the Mountain Hawks, who entered two juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen in the event. Sophomore Crystal Lee shot 80 to tie for 49th place, while junior Ginette Schapira shot 81 and is tied for 55th place, with freshman Kelly Moylan, among others. Freshman Melanie Dickens shot 84 and is tied for 70th place.
Despite sitting in 13th place as a team, the Mountain Hawks are only four shots out of seventh place. Longwood’s Ariel Witmer and Amanda Steinhagen each shot 71 and are tied for the lead after one round, while as a team the Lancers shot 292 and hold an eight stroke lead over second place Eastern Michigan. South Florida (303), College of Charleston (304), and Penn State (305) round out the top five in the team race.
The Nittany Lion Invitational continues Saturday at 10 a.m. with second round action. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
