NASHVILLE – The Lehigh women’s basketball team opened the 2009-10 season in impressive fashion as they defeated the Lipscomb Lady Bisons 77-60. Junior Erica Prosser led the Mountain Hawks as she set a new career-high with 27 points. Lehigh led by 11 at the half and came out strong in the second half building a 22-point lead and it would never look back as the Mountain Hawks moved to 1-0 on the season.
“I was pleased with our overall effort: we were a little sloppy early, but that was to be expected,” head coach Sue Troyan said. “I was happy with the way we settled down and finished.”
The Mountain Hawks opened the first half and built a 6-0 lead over Lipscomb as Lehigh held the Lady Bisons scoreless for the first 5:16. With the score tied at 18-18 late in the half the Mountain Hawks were able to rattle off five straight points and the Brown and White finished the half with a 35-24 lead.
Sophomore forward Alexa Williams eclipsed her career-high in rebounds in the first half with 10. Senior Alex Ross, playing in her home state of Tennessee, led all scorers at the half with eight points.
“Alexa had a great offseason and has worked really hard,” Troyan said. “She has been rebounding well and she was a monster today on the boards.”
Lehigh came out strong in the second half as it was led by Prosser who scored 10 of her 27 points in the first four minutes to give the Mountain Hawks a 47-29 lead. The Brown and White built a 22-point lead on Lipscomb with its strong play on the boards and tough defense.
Williams finished the game with a total of 13 points and 15 rebounds to help Lehigh win the battle in rebounds 43 to 32. It was Williams' first career double-double as a Mountain Hawk. Ross contributed 16 points and shot .300 from beyond the three-point line.
The Mountain Hawks continue their stay in Nashville as they head over to Vanderbilt on Sunday.
Prosser knows that the Commodores are going to be a tough test. “We know that Sunday’s going to be tough. We’ll look at film from tonight, work hard in practice tomorrow and be ready to play.
