Peterson and Kinek capture All-Patriot League honors

Posted: 03/05/2013
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Kelly Peterson and freshman Kerry Kinek were selected for academic and athletic Patriot League honors for the 2012-13 season, respectively the league announced Tuesday. Peterson earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League team, while Kinek was a unanimous selection for the All-Rookie team and voted to the All-Patriot League first team.

Kinek shattered the Lehigh and Patriot League records for rebounds in a single game by grabbing 22 in a 49-37 win at Bucknell on Feb. 20. She played in all 29 games for the Mountain Hawks this season, registering five double-doubles in the process. She displayed her versatility on both ends of the floor by averaging a team-best 12.7 points per game and 50 blocks during the regular season. Kinek was also second in the Patriot League with 8.3 rebounds per game.

Despite missing eight games this season because of a foot injury, Peterson scored in double digits in four contests including a 78-53 victory at Wagner when she dropped a season-best 20 points. She averaged 7.5 points per game and blocked 11 shots. An economics major with a 3.87 cumulative grade point average, Peterson has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor roll in each of her four seasons at Lehigh.

The All-Academic Team honors student-athletes who excel both in their sport and in the classroom. Winners are selected by Sports Information Directors, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. To be eligible for a Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team nomination, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and be a starter or key player in their sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. The All-Patriot League teams are voted on by the coaching staffs at the league’s schools.

No. 5 Lehigh (14-15) will face No.4 Holy Cross in a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Thursday in Worcester, Mass.
