Swimming and diving teams host Army Friday in home finale

Posted: 01/13/2011
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh swimming and diving teams return home for their final home meet of the season as the Mountain Hawks welcome the Army Black Knights to Jacobs Pool Friday evening for a Patriot League showdown. For the Mountain Hawks it marks their first meet in Jacobs Pool since October 23, when Lehigh’s men beat West Chester while the women lost to the Golden Rams.

Prior to last weekend, Lehigh had not competed at all since sweeping rival Lafayette on November 19. After taking time off for final exams and the holidays, Lehigh opened 2011 with a week-long winter training trip to Orlando, Florida before kicking off the new year with a dual meet at Marist last weekend.

The Mountain Hawk men moved to 8-0 with a 175.5-125.5 win over the Red Foxes, matching last year’s outstanding 8-0 start. Sophomore Alex Aboud won a pair of individual events, while juniors Kevin Shoemaker and Chris Toth also picked up two individual event wins to lead the Brown and White.

Lehigh’s women competed well, but ultimately fell 186-109 to the defending MAAC champions. Sophomores Emily DiDonato and Danielle Caruso and freshman Stephanie Yaszemski enjoyed some of the top finishes on the day for Lehigh, which fell to 3-3 on the season.

Army has not competed as a full squad since December 9 when both Black Knight teams were defeated by Navy. Army’s men are 4-4 with wins over Rowan, Stony Brook, Seattle and Boston College, while the Black Knight women own a 3-5 record with wins against Rowan, Stony Brook and C.W. Post.

Last year the teams split a dual meet at West Point with Army’s men handling Lehigh its only dual loss of the season 176-123, while the Mountain Hawk women prevailed 167-133 over the Black Knights.

Friday’s meet will be the final home meet for seven Mountain Hawks: Matt Alford, Andrew DiPietro, Billy Dunne, Jon Gorka, Taylor Foxworth, Kristen Keenan and Allison Montanye.

Action begins with the diving events at 1 p.m. on Friday with swimming events scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m. at Lehigh’s Jacobs Pool.
