Four Mountain Hawks compete at USA Swimming Winter Nationals

AUSTIN, Texas – Four members of the Lehigh swimming and diving team tested themselves against some of the nation’s best swimmers as they competed at the USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships, which concluded Saturday at the University of Texas’ Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Lehigh was represented by senior Frank Cuzzola, juniors Chris Hoke and Demetri Karedis and sophomore Alissa Leung.
 
Hoke and Karedis were the first Mountain Hawks to compete as they swam Thursday in the men’s 50 yard freestyle, an event that featured 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Ryan Lochte. Karedis posted the top finish on the weekend, placing 35th in the preliminaries with a time of 20.50 seconds. Hoke also did well against top competition as he swam a 20.69 to finish in 42nd place.
 
On Saturday, Cuzzola competed in the 100 yard freestyle and finished 54th in a time of 45.92.
 
Lehigh’s women were represented by Leung, who holds school records in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events. Leung competed in the 200 back in Texas, an event that featured another Olympic Gold Medal winner in Missy Franklin. Leung posted a time of 2:05.63 to finish 59th.
 
The Mountain Hawks will now be off until Friday, January 11 when they return to Jacobs Pool to host Patriot League rival Army at 5 p.m.
