Troyan announces incoming softball class of 2015

Posted: 08/08/2011
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - On the heels of the Lehigh softball program’s 11th Patriot League championship, and sixth NCAA Regional appearance in the last eight years, head coach Fran Troyan has announced the addition of four student-athletes who will join the Mountain Hawks in the fall. The versatile class features several players who can play multiple positions, with three states - California, Colorado and New Jersey - represented amongst the group.

“We are excited to welcome our newcomers,” said Troyan. “This class brings a wide range of skills to the table. In order for us to compete at a high level we will need this group to adjust to the speed of the game quickly and hit the ground running.”

The Mountain Hawks return 14 players from their 2011 championship team, including five All-Patriot League performers.

Emily Bausher • P/UT • New Egypt, N.J. • Arts and Sciences
Lehigh’s young pitching staff will be bolstered by the addition of Emily Bausher from New Egypt High School in New Jersey. One of the most accomplished hurlers in state annals, Bausher was the 2010 Star-Ledger Pitcher of the Year and the 2011 Star-Ledger Player of the Year, after leading New Egypt to back-to-back state championships. A MaxPreps second team All-American, Bausher went 24-3 with 353 strikeouts as a senior and finished her high school career with a 68-9 record, a 0.51 earned run average, 1,077 strikeouts and 13 no-hitters. Bausher also served as New Egypt’s leadoff hitter and boasts a .440 career batting average. A versatile athlete, Bausher also lettered in field hockey and basketball.

Coach Troyan on Bausher: “Emily has shown through her high school career that she can be an impact player, both in pitching circle and in the batter's box. We look forward to Emily being able to adjust quickly to the college game and make an impact for us right away.”

Emma Capetz • UT • Carlsbad, Calif. • Arts and Sciences
Utility player Emma Capetz comes to Lehigh from LaCosta Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California. A four-year varsity starter, Capetz was a two-time first team All-League selection and her team’s most valuable player. Capetz batted .434 as a senior and earned a golden glove award. A multi-time Scholar-Athlete, Capetz was twice named to the C.I.F. San Diego Section All-Academic Team, and in her final two seasons, was named to the San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic Team.

Coach Troyan on Capetz: “We are not sure what Emma's best position is. She had a great high school career at second, played a strong outfield for her summer team and has even played some third. We expect Emma to continue to demonstrate this versatility at Lehigh.”

Brandi Hawkins • C/OF • Westminster, Colo. • Arts and Sciences
Brandi Hawkins is a catcher/outfielder from J K Mullen High School in Westminster, Colorado. The latest in a recent trend of Mountain Hawks from the Centennial State, Hawkins was a three-time first- team All-Centennial League performer and a two-time first-team All-State selection. As a senior she played in the Colorado 4A and All-Class senior All-Star games. Hawkins is also a four-time All-State Academic Award winner. In summer ball, Hawkins is a five-time ASA All-Star.

Coach Troyan on Hawkins: “Brandi caught our eye in the recruiting process with her consistent approach to hitting and her gap power. She has versatility on defense - being able to play effectively as a catcher and an outfielder.”

Cassie Waggy • 1B/UT • Manteca, Calif. • Arts and Sciences
Rounding out the Class of 2015 is Cassie Waggy from East Union High School in Manteca, California. A first baseman/utility player, Waggy was a four-time first team All-League selection and the Valley Oak League Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. She earned numerous All-Area and All-District honors from the Manteca Bulletin, Stockton Record and Modesto Bee throughout her four year high school career. Waggy earned a major team award in each of her four years, including being named team most valuable player in 2009 and 2011. She was a member of a pair of league championship teams at East Union.

Coach Troyan on Waggy:  “Cassie is very comfortable with a bat in her hands. She has been a great hitter from her freshman year in high school. Her best position is first base. We may ask her to branch out a bit as she learns the nuances of playing first from Julie Fernandez.”
