BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team bounced back from a tough opening weekend by winning seven of ten games on its Spring Break trip to Florida. On Monday, senior shortstop Jen Colquhoun and freshman Cassie Waggy were recognized with Patriot League weekly awards for their efforts in the final eight games of Lehigh’s trip. Colquhoun was named the league’s Player of the Week, while Waggy earned Rookie of the Week laurels.
Colquhoun was Lehigh’s top hitter at last month’s season-opening Wolfpack Challenge and continued her torrid start at the Rebel Spring Games. In eight games from Monday through Friday, Colquhoun batted .520 (13-for-25) with six extra base hits, six runs scored and six runs batted in. After splitting two games last Sunday, Lehigh went 6-2 in its final eight games in Florida, putting together an eight game win streak at one point. Colquhoun hit safely in seven of eight games and had three three-hit games, including a 3-for-3 effort that included the go-ahead two-run triple in a 2-1 win over Detroit.
For the season, Colquhoun is batting .444 and leads the Mountain Hawks in triples (4) home runs (3) and is tied for the team lead in RBI (12) through 16 games. Colquhoun already has five three-hit games this season and is currently riding a six-game win streak.
Waggy was one of Lehigh’s top hitters on the eight games in Florida, batting .588 (10-for-17) in the final eight games in Kissimmee. She had two hits in four of Lehigh’s eight contests, highlighted by a two-hit, four-RBI effort in Lehigh’s come-from-behind 12-5 win over South Dakota. An infielder by trade, Waggy has started six games as Lehigh’s designated player and one in right field. She is batting .458 in 14 games for the Brown and White.
The defending Patriot League Champion Mountain Hawks (8-8) will be back in action at the Radford Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Radford, Va. Lehigh will face Binghamton and the host Highlanders on both Saturday and Sunday.
