Mountain Hawks return to action at Frostbite & Braxton Regattas

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a week off, the Lehigh rowing team returns to action this weekend when it competes in the Frostbite and Braxton Regattas on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Mountain Hawks enjoyed tremendous success at both regattas last year, finishing near the top of almost every race which included a total of seven gold medals over the two days.

This marks Lehigh’s final competition of the fall slate. The Mountain Hawks will transition into winter training mode before the spring season kicks off with the Murphy Cup on Mar. 24.

“The team is looking to set themselves up for a good spring season by learning what spring racing will be like before we head indoors for the winter,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “Spring racing is different than fall racing and race experience plays a key role in having success, so getting that little bit [of experience] this weekend will hopefully give us an advantage in the spring.”

Lehigh was last in action at a snowy Head of the Schuylkill two weekends ago.

“Having the few extra days off caused a little bit of disruption in our normal routine, but the athletes have been very good about staying focused and getting their work done properly,” said Conley.

The Mountain Hawks look to continue the success from the first two races this fall.

“Our goals for the Frostbite and Braxton are to come home with as many medals as we did last year if not more,” said Conley. “We are entered in multiple events again as we have done all fall and the team looks at each race opportunity with the same intensity, so winning at these two regattas are just as important as winning in the spring.

“Winning on the last race of any season is a good way to jumpstart the next,” Conley continued. “Last year, we did very well at these regattas, which set us up for good winter training.  We are also taking a training trip this winter which will add to the start of a good winter training session.”
