BOSTON, Mass. - The Lehigh rowing season kicked off on Saturday as the Men’s Collegiate Fours competed at the prestigious Head of the Charles, finishing in the top half of the field to guarantee entry into next year’s race. The Mountain Hawks finished 19th out of 39 finishers with a time of 18:25.26.
“It’s definitely an improvement from last year, which was our goal,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “Our other focus was holding the fundamentals all the way down the race course, which overall we were able to do.”
The Lehigh crew consisted of seniors Bryce Hurst, Jon Winder and Emily Hrichak, junior Alex Zook and sophomore Alex Smith.
“For our first race, it was definitely a good showing,” said Conley. “The competition was pretty strong there. We still have some work to do. Our whole goal is to improve so we’re fast in the spring.”
In addition, the Mountain Hawks’ alumni boat finished 26th of 38 finishers in the Men’s Alumni Eights with a time of 17:38.81.
Both the Lehigh women’s and men’s squads are in action next weekend when they travel to Philadelphia for the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday.
“Now that we’ve had one crew race and had a pretty good result, everyone should look at that and want to achieve that, or do better next week,” said Conley. “The goal is to get faster each race and be faster than the previous year’s result [at the Head of the Schuylkill].”
