Senior Evans Kosgei was named the Patriot League male Runner of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. Kosei was the Patriot League’s top finisher in the 8K Gold Race at the Paul Short Run, placing 10th out of 402 runners with a time of 24:25. Kosgei led the Mountain Hawks to a 20th-place finish out of 45 teams while Kosgei’s finish was the best by a Lehigh runner in the race since 2006.
“That’s right where we wanted Evans to be,” said head coach Todd Etters. “You can’t ask much more than that. He is a great leader for the guys on and off the course.”
Kosgei competed against some of the best schools in the country and region as there were eight nationally ranked schools and 13 of the Top 15 regionally ranked programs at the race.
Kosgei improved upon his 45th-place finish at the race last year and improved his time by 26 seconds.
At the Paul Short Run, the University of Oklahoma, which was ranked No. 4 in the nation at the time, took the men’s gold title with 34 points, placing four runners inside the Top 10. Georgetown, ranked No. 22 nationally, took second (143), Columbia third (156), Villanova, ranked No. 18 nationally, took fourth (177) and Syracuse, ranked No. 15 nationally, fifth (229).
Kosgei and the rest of the Mountain Hawks return to action on October 14th when they travel to University Park, Pa. for the Penn State National Invite. Kosgei will look to improve upon his 43rd finish at the race last year which led Lehigh to 17th place.
