BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Casey Gilboy was named the Patriot League Rookie Runner of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. Gilboy was the top freshman at the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet Friday, finishing his first collegiate 8K race in seventh place with a time of 26:45.7, just 15 seconds behind the leader as the Latham, N.Y. native helped Lehigh sweep the top eight spots in the race.
Gilboy was part of a Lehigh team that beat Lafayette in a dual race for the 13th straight time as Gilboy finished 14 seconds ahead of Lafayette’s top runner who placed ninth.
Amazingly, Gilboy slipped and fell halfway through the race as there was a steady downpour and more than two inches of rain, but he recovered and came back to finish strong.
In Gilboy’s first race of the year, the 6K Lehigh Invitational, he placed 16th with a time of 19:20.20 and was one of 10 Lehigh runners to finish in the Top 20.
In addition, sophomore Sam Bernitt received an honorable mention as he finished first at the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet with a time of 26:30.3
Gilboy, Bernitt and the rest of the Mountain Hawks will be back on its home course Friday for the 38th-annual Brooks-Paul Short Run. The all-day event will open with collegiate races throughout the morning and high school competitions in the afternoon. Over 170 colleges are scheduled to compete including dozens of nationally ranked programs.
“I think our guys are right there and ready for this type of competition,” said head coach Todd Etters. “We have to figure out where we match up and execute like we did against Lafayette. We want to run in a nice solid pack all the way through the race.”
