BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s track and field team will begin its outdoor season by competing in the Philadelphia College Classic on Saturday at Penn. The Mountain Hawks will compete against Villanova, La Salle, Saint Joseph’s and Temple in addition to the host Quakers.
The Brown and White are coming off a strong indoor finish in which they set three school records at the IC4A Championships. The 4x400-meter relay team broke the mark set by last year’s squad, as senior Devin Monroe, junior Martin Otieno, and sophomores Chris Watson and Justin Mahoney sprinted to the finish line in 3:16.71. Sophomore Mitchell Biler, junior Kenneth Wilkinson, sophomore Daniel Paez and sophomore Gregory Caldwell completed the 4x800-meter relay in a program record time of 7:38.15. Otieno also finished the 200-meter dash in 21.74 seconds to eclipse a Lehigh record set nearly a decade ago.
Lehigh had three top-20 finishes in the 5,000 meter run, as junior Sam Bernitt and junior Tyler Mueller finished 11th and 12th with times of 14:24.82 and 14:25.45, respectively. Junior James Miller ended the race in 17th place with a time of 14:29.61. Senior Lyle O’Brien was also impressive at the regional championships, finishing the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:22.01.
Saturday’s meet begins at 11 a.m. on Penn’s Franklin Field. The Mountain Hawks’ next competition will be the Winthrop Invite on March 29.
