Posted: 04/23/2012
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Evans Kosgei was named the Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league Monday. Kosgei finished eighth in the 3,000 steeplechase at the Larry Ellis Memorial in Princeton, N.J. where he posted an IC4A time of 8:52.41. His time also set a new school record and could be good enough for a bid to the NCAA Championship.

Kosgei’s time well surpassed the IC4A qualifying time of 9:15.00. The IC4A Championships will be held at Princeton on May 11-13.

Kosgei’s mark also set a school record that hadn’t been broken in 10 years as Alex L’Heureux held the previous record with a time of 8:54.72 in 2002.

Kosgei’s time currently ranks No. 10 in the event in the NCAA Div. I East Outdoor Qualifier List, as the top 48 qualify for bid to the NCAA Championship which will take place June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa. Kosgei’s time is also currently No. 19 in the nation.

Kosgei and the rest of the Mountain Hawks will return to action this weekend in a pair of events. Lehigh will compete in the Penn Relays Thursday-Saturday while Lehigh will also host the Outdoor Games on Goodman Campus on Friday-Saturday.
