Mountain Hawks continue home stand vs. Monmouth, Villanova
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s tennis team looks continue its recent winning ways as the Mountain Hawks will continue their seven match home stand this weekend against Monmouth and Villanova. The Hawks will visit the Lewis Tennis Center Saturday morning before the Wildcats visit Saturday afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks extended their winning streak to four matches and moved to 5-1 on the season with convincing 6-1 and 7-0 wins over Stony Brook and Mount St. Mary’s last weekend. Lehigh dropped just one match last weekend, going 6-for-6 in doubles action and winning 11-of-12 singles matches. Against Mount St. Mary’s, the Mountain Hawks swept through three doubles matches and won six singles matches in straight sets.
For Lehigh, senior Andrew Krentz and sophomores Ben Gilman and Mitchell Petersen survived the weekend with two doubles wins and two singles victories. Krentz and Petersen are tied for the team lead with five singles victories, while Krentz and his No. 3 doubles teammate Gilman have been Lehigh’s most successful pairing with a 5-1 record this season.
Monmouth will return to action this weekend after losing its season opener to NJIT 7-0 on Feb. 1. The Hawks were 8-12 last season including a big 7-0 loss against the Mountain Hawks in Bethlehem.
Villanova also will play its second match of the season this weekend after losing 6-1 to Navy in their season opener on Feb. 2. The Wildcats were 9-11 last season and did not face the Mountain Hawks. Their last matchup occurred in 2006 when Lehigh beat Villanova 7-0 on the road.
Action begins at 4 p.m. Friday when Lehigh hosts Monmouth. On Saturday, the Lehigh-Villanova match is slated for a 3 p.m. start. Both matches will be played inside Lehigh’s Lewis Tennis Center.
Lehigh will close out its home stand when the Mountain Hawks host Temple, Sunday March 3 at 10 a.m.
