Men's Tennis to open fall schedule this weekend in D.C.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s tennis team opens its fall schedule this weekend at the Georgetown Classic, which runs Friday through Sunday at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. This will mark the first action for the Mountain Hawks since their magical run to the Patriot League Championship match last year.

Lehigh is coming off a successful 15-7 campaign and despite the loss of an accomplished senior class, that included All-Patriot League performers Troy List and Collin Laffey to graduation, the Mountain Hawks return a wealth of young talent for 23rd-year head coach Dave Shook.

The Mountain Hawks will send seven players to Washington, D.C. this weekend. Juniors Andrew Krentz and Matt Savran were recently named co-captains and will be counted upon for leadership this season.

Despite the losses to graduation, Shook is very high on his three-man freshman class that consists of Ben Gilman from Chappaqua, N.Y., Daniel Goldblum from Pittsburgh and Mitchell Petersen from Grand Rapids, Mich.

In addition to those five, senior Edgars Rauza and sophomore Timur Chernykh will compete for the Mountain Hawks this weekend. Sophomore Mark Goldberg is coming off a phenomenal freshman campaign where he went 17-2 and captured the J. Daniel Nolan ’58 award for the top first year male athlete in the Lehigh Athletics Department. Goldberg will miss this weekend’s tournament due to an academic commitment.

The Georgetown Classic features one singles draw and one doubles draw for men. Lehigh and Georgetown will be joined by UMBC, Bucknell, George Washington, the University of D.C. and Maryland.
All seven Mountain Hawks will play in the singles draw. Lehigh’s doubles pairings include Goldblum and Rauza, Petersen and Krentz and Savran and Gilman. Chernykh will team up with a player from UMBC in the doubles draw.

The rest of Lehigh’s fall schedule features a trip to the ITA Championships in Ithaca, N.Y., October 13 and 14, while the Mountain Hawks will host five teams for the Lehigh Invitational October 14 through 16.
