BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s tennis team looks continue its recent winning ways as the Mountain Hawks will continue their seven match home stand this weekend against Stony Brook and Mount St. Mary’s. The Seawolves will visit the Lewis Tennis Center Saturday morning before the Mountaineers come calling Sunday morning.
The Mountain Hawks moved to 3-1 on the season with a tightly contested 4-3 win over Delaware on Sunday. Lehigh lost the doubles point, but a reshuffled singles lineup bounced back to win four singles matches to capture its second straight win. Senior Andrew Krentz posted a key three-set win at No. 4 singles, while freshman Jeremy Kochman stepped in at No. 6 and delivered the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alex Sweet.
Krentz and sophomore Mitchell Petersen own the top singles records on the team at 3-1. Krentz has played two matches at No. 4 singles and two at No. 5 while Petersen has split his action at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Lehigh has utilized the same three doubles teams in each of its first four matches with Krentz and sophomore Ben Gilman leading the way at 3-1 out of the No. 3 spot.
After two weather-related cancellations last weekend, Stony Brook will open its spring season at Penn on Friday before visiting the Mountain Hawks on Sunday. The Seawolves had matches against Army and Connecticut cancelled due to last weekend’s winter storm. Stony Brook was 9-9 last season including a narrow 4-3 win over the Mountain Hawks.
Mount St. Mary’s also will open its season this weekend as the Mountaineers will face Howard on Saturday before visiting Lehigh on Sunday. The Mount was 11-10 last season and reached the semifinals of the NEC Tournament. Lehigh defeated Mount St. Mary’s 7-0 in Bethlehem last season.
Action begins at 9 a.m. Saturday when Lehigh hosts Stony Brook. On Sunday, the Lehigh-Mount St. Mary’s match is slated for a 10 a.m. start. Both matches will be played inside Lehigh’s Lewis Tennis Center.
