BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After reeling off two straight wins last weekend, Lehigh will continue its eight-match home stand this weekend. The Mountain Hawks will face Mount St. Mary’s Saturday and Delaware on Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
The Mountain Hawks’ two-match winning streak includes wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Francis (Pa.). In its most recent match against Saint Francis (Pa.), the squad won all three doubles matches in route to a 5-2 victory. Freshman Mitch Petersen was spectacular in singles and doubles play. He teamed with sophomore Mark Goldberg for an 8-2 doubles victory and moved up to the top singles spot for a 6-3, 6-1 victory, to earn his first varsity singles point.
Lehigh has enjoyed early-season success in doubles play. Four players: Timur Chernykh, Ben Gilman, Andrew Krentz, and Edgars Rauza, are currently above-.500 in doubles play. Krentz and Gilman also pace the Mountain Hawks in singles play, with 2-1 records.
Mount St. Mary’s will open its spring season against the Mountain Hawks and are looking for revenge. Lehigh defeated the Mount, 7-0, in last year’s match. The Mountaineers had a tough spring season last year as they finished with a 4-11 record; however, they come into this season with strong experience as more than half of their players are juniors or seniors.
Delaware comes into Sunday’s match seeking its first win of the spring season. The Blue Hens dropped their first match, 4-3, to Richmond. Lehigh will be the team out for revenge in this match as they’ve lost four straight meetings against the Blue Hens. Delaware beat Lehigh, 5-2, last year.
Both weekend matches will take place in the Lewis Tennis Center. Saturday’s match will begin at 11 a.m. while Sunday’s match will start at 2 p.m.
