Styles paces Lehigh against Bison on Senior Day
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Connor Styles swept the one and three meter diving events in his final home meet to lead Lehigh in its final home meet of the season Saturday against Bucknell. Despite a strong effort, those were the only two event wins for the Mountain Hawk men on the day as Bucknell prevailed 191-107 at Jacobs Pool, handing Lehigh its second straight loss and dropping the Mountain Hawks to 7-2 on the dual season.
“Our guys and girls are quite beat up at the moment but we did swim well against a Patriot League powerhouse,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “I am proud of our effort. We raced and performed well under some very difficult circumstances.”
Styles was the only Lehigh senior to win an individual event on senior day as he took the one meter event with a score of 303.97 points and added a winning point total of 294.23
Although the Mountain Hawks did not win any swimming events, they were able to remain competitive with seven runner-up finishes in the meet. Freshman Jake Greene took second in the 1000 yard freestyle, with a time of 9:51.73. Classmate Danny Bennett teamed with senior Chris Toth to deliver a 2-3 finish in the 200 free. Bennett also took second in the 500 free.
Senior Kevin Shoemaker added a runner-up finish in the 100 fly (1:55.49), while Lehigh posted a 2-3-4 finish in the 50 free. Sophomore Demetri Karedis was the runner-up to Eric Sokolosky with a time of 21.40, while sophomore Chris Hoke and junior Frank Cuzzola finished third and fourth respectively. Hoke and Karedis also finished second and third respectively in the 100 free. Shoemaker also placed second in the 200 fly with senior Angelo DiGiacinto finished third.
“We have been training for almost 21 days straight,” Herb said. “It is time to rest the troops and get them ready for Patriot Leagues and end of year swims."
The Mountain Hawks will split their squad next weekend with some athletes competing at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. and others swimming at Drexel Saturday at 1 p.m.
