Lehigh swimmers enjoy success at Mid-Atlantic Championships
LEWISBURG, Pa. - A pair of Lehigh swimmers took part in the USA Swimming Middle Atlantic Senior LC Championship, which began Wednesday at Bucknell. Rising junior transfer Demetri Karedis and senior Kevin Shoemaker both enjoyed success throughout the week, highlighted by Karedis’ first-place finish in the 50m freestyle prelims and third-place finish in the finals.
Karedis also swam the 100m freestyle, posting a preliminary time of 53.45 and finals time of 54.30.
Shoemaker’s efforts were highlighted by Thursday’s 200m freestyle where he came in 12th (2:12.90). He also swam in the 800m freestyle on Wednesday morning.
“I was impressed with these efforts,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “These guys are some of the most committed on the team. I am glad to see their summer success; it will be worth it come the Patriot League [Championships]. I hope more will continue to follow their lead.”
A University of Michigan transfer, Karedis finished the 50m freestyle with a first-place time of 23.82 seconds. That mark stood only 0.33 seconds shy of qualifying for the Olympic Trials. He went on to place third in the finals with a time of 23.79, only 0.1 seconds away from qualifying for the U.S. National Meet and only 0.3 seconds from Olympic Trial qualification.
