BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s men swimming and diving team finished its 2010-11 season posting an 8-2 dual meet record and finishing fourth in the PL Championships. The Mountain Hawks finished just as strong in the classroom as ten student-athletes were named to the Patriot League’s Academic Honor Roll on Wednesday.
Sophomores Will Dearden and David Pennenga led the way for the Mountain Hawks, as they were two of seven Patriot League men’s swimmers and divers to post a 4.0 grade point average in the spring semester. Dearden is a mathematics major while Pennenga is enrolled in the PC Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science.
Along with the two 4.0 GPA Mountain Hawks, junior Jared Blacker posted a 3.80 GPA in accounting, while junior diver Ryan Helfrich posted a 3.79 GPA majoring in mechanical engineering. Senior Andrew DiPietro, Lehigh’s lone All-Patriot League selection, and a member of the first Academic All-Patriot League team, posted a 3.40 GPA in finance this spring.
Other Mountain Hawks who were recognized included senior Matt Alford, juniors Kevin Shoemaker and Chris Toth, sophomore Tyler Lareau, and freshman James Heintzelman.
To be eligible for the honor roll, the student-athlete must have a 3.20 or higher GPA during the academic semester which coincides with his or her sport.
A total of 95 men’s swimming and diving student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor Roll, led by Bucknell’s Christian Treat, who was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year back in February.
