BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a strong showing over the weekend at the Princeton Invitational, two members of the Mountain Hawks’ men’s swimming and diving teams earned Patriot League awards. Sophomore Demetri Karedis was named the league’s male swimmer of the week, while senior Connor Styles was named male diver of the week.
Karedis won two individual events at the Princeton Invitational, with his most impressive performance coming Friday night in the 50 yard freestyle in a school-record setting time of 20.33 seconds. On Friday, Karedis also posted a 20.58 50-yard split in the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay in which Lehigh’s top team bested teams from Georgetown, Princeton and TCNJ.
On Saturday, Karedis continued to cement himself as one of Lehigh’s top sprinters, winning the 100 free in 45.91 seconds and placing seventh in the 200 free. Karedis also swam the anchor leg of Lehigh’s 200 medley relay team, which finished second 1:35.88.
Styles joined Karedis in earning the first weekly award of his Lehigh career. The former walk-on scored 301.75 in the men’s one meter competition, which meets the NCAA regional qualifying standard. Styles finished fourth in the one meter and added a sixth place finish in the three meter with a score of 274.40.
Karedis, Styles and the rest of the Mountain Hawks are gearing up for the annual Lehigh-Lafayette swim meet set for Friday at Lehigh’s Jacobs Pool. Action begins with the diving events at 3 p.m. with swimming to follow at 6 p.m.
