Lehigh finishes up at Big Al Open in New Jersey

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Lehigh men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up action at the Big Al Open Saturday at Princeton’s DeNunzio Pool. Sophomore Danny Bennett led the Mountain Hawks in three individual events, while junior Chris Hoke and sophomore Sean Brant led the way for Lehigh in two events apiece as the Brown and White competed against Fordham, Georgetown, Princeton and TCNJ.
Bennett’s best finish was a tie for fourth in the 200 yard freestyle in the morning session where he clocked in at 1:46.07. He also took ninth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:12.97 and fifth in the 1650 free with a time of 16:29.24.
Hoke showed his versatility with a ninth place finish in the 100 fly (52.67) and an 11th place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke. Brant paced the Mountain Hawks in both backstroke events, finishing eighth in the 100 in the morning (53.68) and fourth in the 200 in the afternoon (1:55.83).
Other leaders for Lehigh on the day included freshmen Michael Lopinto, who finished 11th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01.92), and Jacob Hassel who placed seventh in the 200 fly (1:57.01). One day after winning the 50 free, junior Demetri Karedis placed seventh in the 100 with a time of 47.60.
Lehigh’s relay teams were paced by the 400 medley relay quartet of senior Frank Cuzzola, Karedis, Hoke and freshman Martin Kendig, who finished fourth with a time of 3:11.49. Hassell and Bennett teamed with sophomores Jake Greene and Eric Sherwood to finish fifth in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:15.85, while Brant, Hoke, Hassel and Cuzzola took sixth in the 200 medley relay in 1:38.73.
On the diving boards sophomore Dan Bateman finished sixth in the three meter event and seventh in the one meter.

Next up for the Mountain Hawks is the annual rivalry meet with Lafayette. This year’s edition is slated for a 6 p.m. start Friday from Ruef Natatorium in Easton.
