BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Mountain Hawks will look to win their second game of the season on Tuesday against the Princeton Tigers at the Ulrich Sports Complex at 7 p.m. Lehigh won its season opener against Rutgers by a score of 3-0, but fell in the next game to Fordham, 1-0, despite attempting 19 shots in the match. If the Brown and White win tonight, it will be the 500th victory in program history dating back to the inception of the men’s soccer program in 1913.
Junior Joe Puleo paces the Lehigh attack with two goals and four points. Freshman James Meyerkord owns a goal this season as well, while junior Kevin Strunk has chipped in with two assists. Senior keeper Jonathan Nydell boasts a 0.50 goals against average and has made six stops in net. Through two matches, the Mountain Hawks have attempted 10 more shots than their opponents, holding a 28-18 advantage in the category.
Princeton won the opening match of its season on Saturday against Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0. Junior Antoine Hoppenot scored the only goal with just under three minutes remaining in regulation. Hoppenot bagged 10 goals last season to lead the Tigers to a 9-6-3 record and a 4-2-1 mark in Ivy League play. Princeton returns nine starters this season after finishing third in the league standings in 2009.
Tuesday night's matchup will be the 39th all-time meeting between Princeton and Lehigh; the Tigers hold a 30-7-1 edge overall. The teams first met in 1922 when Princeton defeated Lehigh, 1-0, and last met in 2009 when the Tigers downed the Mountain Hawks by the same score at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh last beat Princeton in 2008 by a 2-1 score on the road.
