Souders set for U.S. under-19 tryouts beginning July 7
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh rising sophomore defenseman Ty Souders will try out for the U.S. men’s national under-19 team, from July 7-10 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The 122-player tryout pool consists of top student-athletes from both the high school and collegiate levels.
“It will be great competition against some of the best rising seniors and incoming freshmen in the country,” said Souders. “A lot of these guys have committed to the ACC schools, Syracuse, Notre Dame and schools like that. It will be great to match up against those type kids. I think I’ll get a lot better over the four days of tryouts.”
The U.S. under-19 team will travel to Turku, Finland in 2012 for the Federation of International Lacrosse U19 World Championships. The final 23-man roster will be announced on July 15.
Souders is one of only six student-athletes who played Division I lacrosse in 2011. The Macungie, Pa. native was stellar in his freshman campaign in the Brown & White, starting all 16 games while recording 29 groundballs and eight caused turnovers.
“The experience of playing Division I lacrosse will help,” said Souders. “Obviously, the speed of the collegiate game is at another level than high school.”
In the end, Souders has aspirations to make the team, but is taking the tryout as a win-win opportunity regardless what happens.
“It’d be unbelievable [to make the team],” he said. “It’s something you dream of - to represent the United States and the Red White and Blue. That’d be awesome.
“I want to take this as an opportunity to get better,” he continued. “Four days to play against some of the best competition in the country.”
