BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Former Lehigh midfielder Roman Lao-Gosney was claimed by the Hamilton Nationals Wednesday as part of the Major League Lacrosse Waiver Wire. Lao-Gosney enjoyed a stellar senior season, earning Third Team All-America honors after posting a career-high 26 points (20 goals, six assists). Teams had the opportunity to place waiver claims on anyone not selected in the 2012 Collegiate Draft and who registered for the MLL Player Pool.
Lao-Gosney becomes the third Lehigh student-athlete to join a Major League Lacrosse roster, along with Andrew Lucas and Todd Schreiner. Lucas played for the Long Island Lizards in 2006 while Schreiner was a member of the Rochester Rattlers from 2002-03.
Current Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese enjoyed a standout MLL career after being selected second overall in 2003 by Rochester. Among his professional accomplishments were a spot on the 2005 All-Star Team and the 2007 MLL Championship with the Philadelphia Barrage.
Along with his All-America distinction, Lao-Gosney was a First Team All-Patriot League member for the first time and an Academic All-Patriot League recipient for a second straight year. Also a USILA Scholar All-American, Roman was one of three Mountain Hawks to play in the USILA North-South Game which featured the top seniors in the nation. Lao-Gosney finished his career with 69 points (47 goals, 22 assists), enjoying a strong performance against Maryland in the NCAA Tournament; he scored a goal and added an assist against one of the nation’s strongest defenses.
In the end, Lao-Gosney was co-captain for a team which finished 14-3, the most wins in program history. The Mountain Hawks won their first Patriot League Tournament Title to qualify for their first-ever NCAA Tournament.
