FEATURE STORY
:
Reunited: Brendan Callahan and Errol Wilson
Errol Wilson is in his first season as Lehigh assistant coach following successful stints at Brown and Rutgers. One of three Stony Brook alums on staff, Wilson comes to the Lehigh Valley after one season as associate head coach at Rutgers. He serves as associate defensive coordinator and goalie coordinator, man-down coordinator and camps/clinics coordinator.
In his first season on staff, Wilson has helped lead the squad to new heights, owning a school-record 14 wins, a program record nine-game winning streak and its highest-ever national ranking (#7) along with its first Patriot League Tournament Title and NCAA Tournament appearance. This marks Wilson’s second NCAA Tournament appearance as assistant coach after leading Brown to the 2009 tournament where it dropped an overtime heartbreaker at Johns Hopkins.
Wilson has worked with freshman goalie Matt Poillon, who stands second nationally with a 6.55 GAA and sixth with a 59.5 save percentage, becoming Lehigh’s first-ever Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year. Poillon earned four Patriot League Goalie of the Week honors while garnering Rookie of the Week twice. In addition, each one of Lehigh’s close defensemen was named All-Patriot League: Ty Souders (First), Mike Noone (second) and Lukas Mikelinich (second).
The Mountain Hawks own the nation’s #2 scoring defense (only behind Notre Dame), holding opponents to only 6.61 goals per game. Lehigh picked up its first shutout in 40 years with a 13-0 triumph over Manhattan, allowed only two goals to VMI and five or fewer to Penn State, Navy, Holy Cross, Penn and Saint Joseph’s. The squad extended its shutout streak to an incredible 90:14 before the Quakers scored with 5:04 remaining in the second quarter. The streak spanned from the fourth quarter against Villanova, through the entire Manhattan contest and the first 24:56 at Penn.
At Rutgers last season, Wilson helped the Scarlet Knights win five of their first six games last season and coached a defense which allowed only 8.27 goals per game.
“I’m excited to be at a pristine institution of higher education, and also one that is full of tradition like Lehigh,” said Wilson. “The men’s lacrosse program has a great foundation and is moving in the right direction. It’s a tribute to the university, the coaching staff and the young men that have done the work on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”
Prior to Rutgers, Wilson served as assistant coach at Brown for four seasons (2007-10). While there, he was both offensive coordinator and goalie coach, helping the Bears reach new heights by winning an Ivy League Championship in 2008, then earning an NCAA Tournament berth in ’09. Wilson worked with and mentored one of the nation’s top goalies in Jordan Burke. The 2009 USILA Goalie of the Year, Burke was twice named the Ivy League Player of the Year and New England Player of the Year, while earning First Team All-America honors as well.
Wilson has experience with Bruin Lacrosse Camps in Providence, R.I. where he promoted and advertised three camps and supervised staff and day-to-day schedule.
“I would like to thank Coach Cassese for the opportunity to be a part of the Mountain Hawks staff and family,” said Wilson. “I was fortunate to have him as a coach at Stony Brook; he mentored me as both a player, and as a coach. When the opportunity presented itself to work with amazing student-athletes, Coach Cassese and my former teammate/friend Coach Callahan, it was an opportunity I didn’t want to pass by.”
Wilson was a four-year letterwinner at Stony Brook where he was teammates with goalie and current Lehigh assistant coach Brendan Callahan.
