Mountain Hawks drop home opener to #10 Villanova
The Lehigh men’s lacrosse team dropped a tough home opener to #10 Villanova on Saturday, falling 17-7 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The loss snapped a three-game home winning streak against the Wildcats, and puts the Mountain Hawks at 1-1 on the season. Freshman Dan Taylor led the way offensively with three points via two goals and an assist.

Mountain Hawks host #10 Villanova in big home opener Saturday
Following a dominating 11-4 win over Saint Joseph’s, the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team will welcome #10 Villanova for its home opener on Saturday. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. in the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks are eying their first win over a top-10 foe since the end of the 2010 season when they also defeated the Wildcats (when they were ranked ninth).

Fantoni and Snyder named to Tewaaraton Award Watch List
Lehigh men’s lacrosse junior standouts Dante Fantoni and Ryan Snyder have been named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, as announced on Wednesday. The Tewaaraton is considered the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the nation’s top collegiate lacrosse player. Fantoni and Snyder are both coming off All-Patriot League seasons which included 33 goals for Fantoni and a league record 118 groundballs for Snyder.

Poillon earns Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week
Just one game into his collegiate career, Lehigh freshman goalie Matt Poillon has earned Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. Poillon stopped 13-of-17 shots in the season opener at Saint Joseph’s Saturday, helping Lehigh to an 11-4 victory. In doing so, he became the first Mountain Hawk in school history to earn Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week.

Lehigh opens season with 11-4 win at Saint Joseph’s
The Lehigh men’s lacrosse team broke a 2-2 tie by scoring seven consecutive goals to run away with an 11-4 win over Saint Joseph’s on Saturday, in the season opener for both teams. Freshman goalie Matt Poillon made 12 saves in his collegiate debut while junior Ryan Snyder won 13-of-17 faceoffs with a career-high tying 13 groundballs to lead the way. The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday when they welcome 10th nationally-ranked Villanova to the Ulrich Sports Complex.

Cassese named assistant coach for 2014 U.S. Men’s National Team
Lehigh men’s lacrosse coach Kevin Cassese has been named an assistant coach for the 2014 U.S. men’s national team, as announced on Friday. He will join a staff led by former Navy head coach Richie Meade, who was named the United States’ head coach in December. Also on Meade’s staff are Dave Pietramala (Johns Hopkins) and Jeff Tambroni (Penn State).

Lehigh kicks off 2012 campaign at Saint Joseph’s Saturday
Following more than four weeks of preseason practice, the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team will travel to Philadelphia on Saturday for its season opener at Saint Joseph’s. This marks the fifth straight year that the Mountain Hawks will open with Saint Joe’s, with Lehigh winning three of the previous four meetings. PLEASE NOTE: Faceoff has been pushed back to 2 p.m. due to wintry weather.

Season Preview: Lehigh looks to take the next step in 2012
By most accounts, the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team enjoyed a successful 2011 season, but the Mountain Hawks aren’t satisfied. Their most significant accomplishment was making the team’s first Patriot League Tournament since 2006, but they want more. Entering this season, Lehigh has its eyes set on breaking onto the national lacrosse landscape while competing for a league championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament, where they hope to do damage against the nation’s elite.

DiMaria and Fantoni: Lehigh’s dynamic duo
Lehigh junior attackmen David DiMaria and Dante Fantoni went to high school less than a mile from each other on Long Island. While DiMaria was tearing it up for Half Hollows Hills West, Fantoni was doing the same for St. Anthony’s. Little did they know that in the near future, the two would complement each other as one of the nation’s top collegiate scoring duos. Not only that, but they’d also help lead the Mountain Hawks to the verge of national prowess.

Cassese and Dougherty enjoying busy weekend together
Following a preseason scrimmage against each other Saturday, head coaches Kevin Cassese of Lehigh and Brian Dougherty of Chestnut Hill will be joining forces Sunday when the two friends coach the U.S. National Team in the Champion Challenge. After the Mountain Hawks and Griffins squared off, the two hopped in a car for the Philadelphia airport. Their ultimate destination is Lake Buena Vista, Fla. where they’ll lead the United States against defending national semifinalist Denver.

Mountain Hawks picked fourth in preseason poll
After advancing to the program’s first Patriot League Tournament since 2006 last season, the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team is projected to do it again as the Mountain Hawks were picked fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll announced on Wednesday. The results were unveiled during the league’s preseason media teleconference.

Lehigh’s game at Navy to air nationally on CBS Sports Network
Lehigh men’s lacrosse’s showdown at Navy has been moved to Friday, Mar. 30 and will air nation-wide on CBS Sports Network. Faceoff in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will be looking for their second straight win over the Midshipmen after breaking a 98-year drought last year with a thrilling 14-10 win.

Inside Lacrosse NCAA Preview 2012: No. 28 Lehigh
Lehigh made the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in five seasons with a 7 -9 record in 2011. The year ended in disappointing fashion against Bucknell, 13-5. Most of the starters return, so coach Kevin Cassese hopes this is the season the Mountain Hawks can reach their first NCAA Tournament.

Cassese to coach U.S. national team in Champion Challenge
Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese will continue his work with the U.S. men’s national team when he coaches the squad in an exhibition tilt on Sunday, Jan. 29 against defending National Semifinalist Denver. Faceoff against the Pioneers is set for 1:30 p.m. at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Cassese will be joined by Towson head coach Shawn Nadelen and Chestnut Hill head coach Brian Dougherty to make up the staff.

Lehigh wraps up first weekend of preseason practice
With its season opener now less than four weeks away, the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team kicked off preseason practice over the weekend with double sessions on Saturday and Sunday. The Mountain Hawks battled frigid temperatures, hitting the field twice each day as the squad works towards its season opener on Feb. 11 at Saint Joseph’s.
