BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In perhaps his most impressive honor to date, Lehigh senior guard C.J. McCollum has been named a preseason First Team All-American, as announced by The Associated Press on Monday. McCollum joins Cody Zeller (Indiana), Doug McDermott (Creighton), Deshaun Thomas (Ohio State), Isaiah Cannon (Murray State) and Trey Burke (Michigan) as the top players in the nation. There were six named to the team due to a tie in voting.
A two-time AP honorable mention All-American, McCollum was named preseason Patriot League Player of the Year for a third straight season at last week’s Media Day. He was also named a preseason First Team All-American by Sporting News. McCollum stands second in Lehigh and Patriot League history in career scoring. Currently at 2,074 career points, he needs only 151 to break the league mark of 2,224 while he’s 630 from breaking the school record of 2,703 currently held by Daren Queenan.
McCollum has been a consistent scorer from day one, averaging 19.1 points per game as a freshman, 21.8 as a sophomore and 21.9 a season ago. He is well-known nationally for his dominant 30-point, six-rebound, six-assist effort in Lehigh’s historic NCAA Tournament win over Duke. McCollum led the Mountain Hawks in points, rebounds, assists and steals a season ago.
The Mountain Hawks also received votes in the AP Preseason Top-25 released last week. Lehigh received two votes meaning one voter picked the squad 24th or two picked it 25th. The Mountain Hawks were tied with Stanford out of the Pac-12, each receiving two votes.
