BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh placed eight student-athletes on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad, announced on Monday. The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2007-08 academic year.
Leading the way for the Mountain Hawks are seniors Christy Smith and Lauren Volpe, both of whom were named to the National Academic Squad for the fourth consecutive season. Sophomores Julie Kuhns and Lindsey Smith also made repeat appearances on the team, along with four Lehigh freshmen: Lauren Cawley, Katey Fardelmann, Jessica Miller and Lilia Stefaniwsky.
Lehigh was also one of just 48 Division I field hockey programs to achieve a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, which honors the Mountain Hawks with the NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. This is the sixth consecutive season that the Brown and White has earned this distinction as a team, after it earned a 3.10 team GPA in the 2007 fall semester.
On the turf, Lehigh posted an 8-10 record in 2007, earning the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League tournament. The Mountain Hawks are currently involved in winter workouts and will soon begin their spring schedule as they begin preparations for the 2008 season.
