BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Fresh off a strong 2011 season, the Lehigh field hockey team will enjoy a busy spring schedule, beginning this Saturday with a home tournament against some of the top teams in the region. In total, the Mountain Hawks host two tournaments, play at archrival Lafayette and host an Alumni Game as they prepare for the 2012 campaign this fall.
“The spring’s a great time for individual work,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “We’ve had a lot of time to work with the kids on individual fundamental skills and have now moved to team aspects. We work on a variety of things from day to day.”
The Mountain Hawks have already been hard at work for months, but face their first outside competition of the spring on Saturday in a tournament featuring Patriot League rivals Lafayette and Colgate, along with NEC power Rider and Penn out of the Ivy League. A round robin of games will take place from approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the Mountain Hawks set to play at 9:00, 10:30, 12:00 and 2:15.
Lehigh heads to Lafayette on April 11 for a 7 p.m. tilt against the Leopards. The squad will then host its second tournament on April 15 before wrapping up the spring with its Alumni Game on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m.
“Our fitness level has greatly improved,” said Blue. “Everyone’s working hard on the new skills that we’re teaching, so that’s a big positive. The team as a whole wants to play and wants to win. I think their attitude has completely changed.
“It’s great to play at home,” Blue continued. “We love our facility and playing at home. We have a bunch of good teams coming in for two different weekends. We’re just really excited to get out there and play someone other than ourselves. We’re looking to compete.”
The Mountain Hawks finished 2011 with a 3-2 Patriot League record, winning four of their last seven games to earn their third league tournament berth in the last five seasons. Lehigh will return three of their top five scorers, along with all four of its All-League honorees from a year ago: Sierra Segear, Kim Eng, Marie Mignogna and Steph Fratoni.
