Lehigh field hockey honored by NFHCA for academic success
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a strong season on the field and in the classroom, nine Lehigh field hockey players have been named to the 2011 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, as announced on Monday. The Mountain Hawks also earned an academic team award for posting a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Three seniors earned the individual honor, including Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year Abby Tilton. Two-time Academic All-League member Caitlin Donnelly was also recognized, along with Allison Kowalski. All three have been named to the National Academic Squad four straight years.
Junior Brittany Johnson was honored, as were five freshmen - Steph Fratoni, Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson, Lindsay Metzger, Erika Schmidt and Abby Sprinkel.
The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom, highlighted by Tilton’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Tilton posted a 3.93 GPA in the IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Sciences) program while Donnelly and Kowalski were right behind with GPAs of 3.87 and 3.80, respectively.
To be named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad, student-athletes must achieve a 3.30 GPA or higher through the fall semester.
The Mountain Hawks finished their 2011 campaign strong, winning four of their last seven contests and earning their third Patriot League Tournament appearance in the last five seasons.
