Field hockey earns several NFHCA academic honors
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team earned a number of academic honors from the NFHCA last week. The Mountain Hawks garnered an academic team award for a collective GPA over 3.0 while nine individuals were named to the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. In addition, freshman Katherine Koomar was among the Division I Scholars of Distinction for a GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.
Five freshmen were named to the National Academic Squad, including Koomar, Caitlin Bryan, Amie Diamond, Kat Kneizys and Taylor Mygatt. Also recognized were Brittany Johnson (a four-year award recipient) and sophomores Steph Fratoni, Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson and Lindsay Metzger.
The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.
Lehigh has enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom, also placing 13 on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for a semester GPA of 3.20 or higher. Koomar led the way with a perfect 4.00 GPA in the College of Arts and Sciences while Fratoni posted a 3.88 and senior Carly Smith a 3.75. Metzger was named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team as well.
Despite falling short of the Patriot League Tournament, the 2012 Lehigh field hockey season did have its highlights. The Mountain Hawks beat a CAA team for the first time since 2006 while scoring their most goals since 2004 in that contest. Lehigh also topped perennial NEC power Monmouth for the first time since 2005.
