BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Former Mountain Hawks standout Matt McBride has been making quite a bit of noise for the Kinston Indians, a Class A minor league team in the Carolina League. Through 20 games McBride is batting .405 with 32 hits, including ten doubles and five home runs, to go along with 25 runs batted in and 17 runs scored. He’s also boasting a slugging percentage over .700 and an OPS of 1.187. McBride helped lead the Indians to a 7-2 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday evening as he blasted two homers, totaled three hits and drove in four runs.
McBride is currently leading the Carolina League in doubles, hits, slugging percentage and runs batted in, while ranking second in batting average, OPS, and home runs and third in runs scored. His two home run performance on Wednesday marked the second time this spring he has hit a pair of round trippers in a single game, after accomplishing the feat versus Salem on April 18.
The Indians and McBride will be back in action on April 30 when they wrap up a three-game series versus Salem, before embarking on a six-game road swing on May 1.
During his time at Lehigh, McBride was named the 2006 Patriot League Player of the Year and spent most of his final season in the Brown and White rewriting the record book. He led the Mountain Hawks in batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, slugging percentage and stolen bases. With those leading numbers, McBride set new season records in at bats, RBIs and hits, as well as tying for the number of games played and home runs. McBride also became Lehigh’s career leader in doubles that season with a total of 56.
