Baseball to battle two teams in the Bronx this weekend

Posted: 03/01/2013
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh baseball team will travel to the Bronx, N.Y. this weekend for four games against Fordham and Iona. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to build on a two-game winning streak after they defeated Maryland Eastern-Shore in a doubleheader by scores of 13-2 and 8-4 on Wednesday. Lehigh is 3-2 this season.
The Mountain Hawks were originally scheduled to play four games against Iona, but Fordham’s field became available after a scheduled Ram road trip was cancelled due to weather. Instead Lehigh will play Fordham and Iona on Saturday and then face those same two teams on Sunday.

Junior Colin Gotzon had a solid outing on the mound for Lehigh in game one of Wednesday’s twinbill, striking out three batters and giving up just two hits in five innings of work. Sophomore Jordan Smith, freshman Kevin Boswick and sophomore Josh Flyer came on in relief and surrendered one run in the game’s last four innings. Senior Casey Turner is Lehigh’s top hitter with a .415 (7-for-17) batting average through the first five games of the season, while sophomore Justin Pacchioli has a team-high five RBI. The Mountain Hawks raked 29 hits over the two games and scored eight runs in two innings of game two to erase a 4-0 deficit after four innings of play.

The Rams are coming off a doubleheader sweep against St. Peter’s College and are 3-2 on the young season. Iona heads into the weekend trying to halt a three game losing streak, as the Gaels dropped three straight to George Mason and are just 1-5 this season. The Mountain Hawks lost three of four games against the Gaels on their home field last season.

Lehigh will face Fordham and Iona at noon and 3 p.m. respectively on Saturday. Sunday’s contest against Iona is scheduled for noon and will be followed by a second game against the Rams at 3 p.m. All four games will be played in Fordham’s Houlihan Park.
