Psi Stars capture Summer Softball Title
When Greg Schulze, the former Director of Intramurals and Recreation, came to campus, he felt there was a need to offer an activity that could bring our faculty, staff and students together and participate in an activity that most people were familiar with. Whether you played at a picnic, playground or in the case of the women, varsity sport in high school and college, softball was the answer! A sport that offered ample opportunity for a large contingent for both men and women to play at the same time with rules that would level the playing field and would bring everyone together for the sake of athletic competition and for the most part, FUN!! The Summer Softball League was established in the summer of 1980, making this past year, the 30th anniversary. John Huennekens, has been a main fixture of this league and member of the Psi Stars for 27 years. He has been a loyal participant, coach and CEO of a team that is comprised of mostly Graduate Students, with some students and some faculty members rounding out the group. Many will have met each other for the first time but John utilized this activity for the sake of bonding and competition!
Under John’s direction, the Psi Stars came out on top to take the title of Summer Softball Champions by beating the team of Von Laue in an exciting game and final score of 14-13.
Psi Stars took an early lead with a 14-7 score going into the top of 5th. However Von Laue came back with earning runs in the 5th and 6th and 4 runs in the top of the 7th. Unfortunately, it was not enough and Psi Stars celebrated their first ever title!
John said, “I thought this was a particularly good year, not just because we won, but because the spirit was very positive with all the teams. I have now played on the Psi Stars for the last 27 seasons, and I believe this is the first time we've ever won the championship, so this was a big thrill for me!” For now, the Psi Stars can bask in the glory of their season, put their gloves away for another seasons and look back on a great season. But for John, this victory will relish in his mind until the start of summer season of 2012 and back to business!
Thank you to all of the participants for making the season a success! We couldn’t do it without you!!!!
