BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a successful regular season, the Lehigh track and field teams will make a trip to Easton, Pa. beginning on Friday for the 2011 Patriot League Track and Field Championships. The Mountain Hawks have high expectations after accomplishing several great feats this season and some record-breaking performances last weekend.
Lehigh is coming off an exceptional showing last weekend at the Penn Relays and the Lehigh Games. Emily Settle was the story for Lehigh, as she finished third in the hammer throw with an ECAC qualifying distance of 54.42 meters on Thursday at the Penn Relays. Settle’s distance was a personal best for her and a school record as well. Then on Friday at the Lehigh games, Settle re-broke her school record in the same event, beating it by almost a meter (55.13m). For her efforts, Settle earned Patriot League Female Field Athlete of the Week.
On the men’s side, Evans Kosgei hit a personal record 8:58, good for sixth place at the Penn Relays last Thursday. The time was just not a personal best for Kosgei, but it was a season-high for any Patriot League track athlete.
At the 2011 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships this past March, Lehigh had nine total All-Patriot League performances, with seven coming on the women’s side and two coming on the men’s side. On the women’s side, freshman Jessica Kendzor was named women’s Rookie of the meet for her performances. Kendzor finished second in the women’s 1000 meter run with a time of 2:53.39, earning eight team points for Lehigh. Over on the men’s side, Niall Buckley earned 10 points for the Mountain Hawks, scoring a time of 1:53.09 in the 800 meter run, earning him first place honors. The women’s team finished in third place overall while the men’s team placed fourth.
At last year’s Patriot League Track and Field Championships, both the men’s and women’s teams placed fifth.
Friday will kick off with the men’s 10,000 meter run beginning at 9:15 a.m. followed by the women’s 10,000 meter run at 10 a.m. Jumping events are scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. on Friday and throwing events are slated for 12. Action will continue through Saturday morning and afternoon.
