Posted: 03/12/2012
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – At the conclusion of the winter sports season, Lehigh remains tied for first in the Presidents’ Cup standings announced by the Patriot League office on Monday. The Mountain Hawks are tied for first with Navy with both schools having earned 67.25 points thus far. Bucknell is a close second with 65.5 points, while American and Colgate are tied for fourth, followed by Army, Lafayette, and Holy Cross.
The Lehigh men hold the outright lead in the men’s standings with 35.25 points. Bucknell sits in second with 31.5, followed by Navy and American. The men’s basketball team downed Bucknell to capture its second Patriot League title in three years after finishing second in the regular season. The victory also earned the team a trip to the NCAA tournament, where the Mountain Hawks will face Duke on Friday in Greensboro, N.C. Lehigh’s men’s swimming and diving and indoor track and field teams both finished fourth at their respective Patriot League Championships.
On the women’s side Lehigh sits in fourth place, though just 5.5 points separate the Mountain Hawks (32) from first-place Navy (37.5). A second-place regular season finish and semifinal appearance in women’s basketball led the charge for women’s winter sports, while the indoor track and field team placed third at the league championships.
The Mountain Hawks climbed to the top of the standings in the fall on the strength of their tenth Patriot League Championship in football after going undefeated in league play during the regular season for the second straight year. Lehigh also reached league semifinals in men’s soccer, field hockey and volleyball during the fall.
Presidents’ Cup points are based on a team’s performance in the regular season and postseason Patriot League standings. Lehigh has never captured a Presidents’ Cup, but the Brown and White have finished second twice and placed third last year.
